    One important grammar difference was missed. My Indian colleagues tend to ask: Can you able...? instead of Are you able? Here this in almost every telecon... 'Can you able to see my screen?' in 9 out 10 times...

    As the most widely spoken, second language, the English language belongs to the whole world. All that matters, imo, is that it should be intelligible to any careful listener with a reasonable level of English comprehension. The variety of accents in Britain, alone, in the days before radio and tv homogenised them somewhat, was greater than any differences, worldwide, now. I’m pretty certain that, say, aJapanese ESL and a Brazilian one, at a similar level, would have less trouble communicating than me (aged five) and my newly-found, Geordie, holiday friend did in 1949. We grew up within 100 miles of each other yet our accents were totally different.

    Pilgrims originally settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts not Puritans. Puritans originally settled in Massachusetts Bay Colony. There's a difference - Pilgrims separated from the Church of England and Puritans wanted to reforn the Church of England. No cussing on TV in the US that's the reason for minced oaths. I use the term cockroach and I'm from the US.

    In some Indian cultures, it is common for people to have two names, one is called the "pet" name which is used to be called by people within the household only, and the other one is the official name which will be registered in the records. So when they're asking for good name they are asking for your real name.

    As Dostoyevsky pointed out, a common profanity has multiple meanings depending on the way in which it is spoken. It is no different than the word “quite“in this regard.

  • @richardjones9007
    @richardjones9007 3 дня назад

    Your observation that stressing the adjective gives a different meaning to the sentence is true of any sentence in English and has nothing to do with the meaning of quite. For example, saying “your simply beautiful“ changes nuance if you emphasize simply in one case, and beautiful in the other.

  • @richardjones9007
    @richardjones9007 3 дня назад

    A lingua Franca would be a good thing from the point of view of a deterministic humankind, but not from a strictly Christian point of view. It would foster industry, innovation, achievement. Which is precisely why God reacted negatively to the tower of babel and forced humans to speak a variety of languages. God noted that with a common language there was nothing humans could not do, which would derogate God’s sovereignty and necessitated a multiplication of languages.
